The blog of Dr Glenn Andrew Peoples on Theology, Philosophy, and Social Issues

Looking for other podcasts

Hi folks, I thought that with such an educated and knowledgeable readership this would be a good place to ask this question:

What other podcasts on theology / philosophy of religion / philosophy do you know of that are based in the southern hemisphere?

I’m trying to put together a list, but to be honest I don’t listen to very many podcasts. If you know of any, drop me a line or post a comment on this blog.

Thanks!

I’m a huge fan of Champion Forest Baptist Church’s “Biblical Literacy” Podcast. It’s quite thorough and thought provoking. It deals both with biblical teachings as well as defenses of the scripture, and with over 300 episodes, there’s plenty of material.

Okay I totally missed “Southern Hemisphere”…

    Still, it’s a good podcast!

I used to listen to “The Sci Phi Show” with Jason Rennie out of Australia, I think. The material is presented at a “popular” level (i.e., not “phd” level), but its fun to listen to and helpful for people like me who are actually at that “popular” level and only dabble in these subjects because of personal interest. He ties philosophical ideas in with science fiction. I’m not much of a sci fi fan, but I would listen for the nuts-and-bolts explanation of philosophical ideas put in layman’s terms. Jason is a Christian, so he presents it from that perspective. The most interesting thing, however, with his older shows is that he managed to get direct one-on-one interviews with some pretty big-name players in the field, including Alvin Plantinga, William Lane Craig, Peter Van Inwagen, Michael Shermer, Susan Blackmore, Quentin Smith, Del Ratzsch, Ben Witherington III, David Chalmers, Richard Swinburne, etc.

The podcast sort of faded away for some time, and he didn’t post anything for a couple of years. However, I just took a look, and it looks like he’s back at it again as of January of this year. I’ll have to download some episodes now and get caught up.

Archives of the old show are here:

(for the cool interviews, scroll down and look for the section titled “Outcasts”–that’s what he called the shows with the interviews)

    The new show is here:

(he used to have a domain called thesciphishow.com [note the “the”], but that appears to be defunct now)

Hey, something just occurred to me: if Jason Rennie could do it, why couldn’t you? I mean the interviews with the big players. That might increase your exposure and help you get noticed by would-be employers.

I’ve also listened to this one a few times:

The “Centre for Public Christianity” (yippee, I get to spell “Center” with the last two letters reversed!). It is from Australia, I believe.

Its not exclusively philosophy/theology, but the often feature such topics. Looks like the latest one is an interview with Alvin Plantinga talking about Dawkins.

  6. If the Bible counts as “theology / philosophy of religion / philosophy” my 5 minute Bible podcasts have been going a few years now.

  7. “(yippee, I get to spell “Center” with the last two letters reversed!)”

Well, you did when you added that comment. 😉 Yeah, the centre for public Christianity and the sci phi show are the only other ones I was aware of.

Tim – Thanks for letting me know about yours.

I have to say, the list is short!

    How does that song go?

“You say colour, I say color….”

I just noticed that the list consists of podcasts in the southern hemisphere, so technically my suggestion doesn’t count. However, I thought the following podcast was too good not to mention:

    History of Philosophy podcast series
    (http://www.kcl.ac.uk/ikings/index.php?id=409)

Description: Peter Adamson, Professor of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at King’s College London, takes listeners through the history of philosophy, “without any gaps.” Beginning with the earliest ancient thinkers, the series will look at the ideas and lives of the major philosophers (eventually covering in detail such giants as Plato, Aristotle, Avicenna, Aquinas, Descartes, and Kant) as well as the lesser-known figures of the tradition.

  10. Well obviously there is the MandM Fallacy Friday Podcast. It may be produced in Ireland but the material is written from New Zealand and contains New Zealand examples.

  11. I am also fairly sure that Average Joe has one in development.

  12. Sunday Night Safran from Australia’s Triple J is pretty awesome; old Father Bob and John Safran go down a real treat.
